In late January, we sent a questionnaire on the Global Goals to party leaders.

BC2030 Party Leaders' Questionnaire

This questionnaire was received February 4, 2017 and is published verbatim

1. Do you endorse the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, to which the Canadian government is a signatory?

Yes. But endorsing goals without a plan to reach them isn’t helpful. We only have to witness the ongoing broken promises regarding national and international GHG reduction targets as a testament to this. In our platform to be released closer to the election, it will be evident how many of these goals are addressed.

2. Which of the Sustainable Development Goals does your party platform address?

The BC Greens will introduce a comprehensive Basic Income pilot project in British Columbia that will go a long way to deal with a number of the goals (e.g., 1, 2 and 10). We’ll also be outlining a comprehensive suite of climate and clean energy policies (Andrew Weaver, the Leader of the BC Greens, has served as a Lead Author on the IPCC 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th scientific assessments). We will introduce Environmental Bill of Rights legislation modelled after the private member bill submitted by our sitting MLA. More details will emerge as we release our platform.

3. What targets, timelines, and indicators will your party commit to in an effort to address these goals?

Meeting sustainable development goal 17 requires broad consultation and a bottom up governance model of policy formulation. This will take time. One of our first priorities will be the development of a poverty reduction plan. In terms of indicators, we have already identified performance metrics that will be released in our platform. These move well beyond the traditional GDP and Debt/GDP metrics.

4. Goal 17 of the SDGs seeks to strengthen means of implementation through collaborative partnerships. How do you foresee engaging with civil society and the private sector to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals?

British Columbia is one of the few jurisdictions that does not make full you of the legislative committee structure. A BC Green government would re-invigorate legislative committees and task them with seeking broad input on key policy measures. In addition, many of the grand challenges addressed in the 17 Sustainability Goals require bipartisan efforts to reach workable solutions. The BC Greens are committed to ensure that the Executive Committee (cabinet) of a BC Green government includes key members from opposition parties.

5. In keeping with this same principle, how do you foresee working with other municipal, provincial, and federal leaders toward policy coherence regarding the Sustainable Development Goals?

The BC Greens are committed to engaging local, indigenous and federal governments in a collaborative atmosphere of trust and respect. As a start, we would endorse the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
